Ceylon Blue & Pink Sapphire Mines Depleted

Summer of 2011 has been a period of great sadness as jewelry trade members discover from their gem dealers that blue sapphires in addition to the pinks are no longer being found in the Sri Lankan mines.

"It isn't just the large sizes anymore", commented my primary Sri Lankan sapphire dealer named Upali, "all material regardless of size is diminished...you just cannot get quality eye-clean, well-cut fine colored material anymore".

Sapphires have been heavily mined in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) over the past few decades where they are known for their rich, bold and well saturated color.  Historically there have been few new sources of sapphire rough.  Probably one of the larger discoveries was in Madagascar around the turn of the century.  Although it now has been almost a decade since the Madagascan "new" find hit the market.  Madagascar has never had the large mine production seen in Sri Lanka and often seesaws between depletion, deeper digging or newer mining techniques and small new finds.  In general these two heavily depended upon sources have dwindling to completely depleted material.  A small find of pinks in Winza Tanzania that includes both electric pink sapphire, red rubies and pink/red spinels has been the most recent discovery but stones are typically small (under one carat), mines have low production and their rarity and neon color can fetch prices at $3,000+ p/carat.   In the past six months blue and pink sapphire prices have risen tremendously.  The majority of the sapphires showcased on our web-site were purchased prior to this huge increase.   Until new finds of quality material is found the industry is likely to see star sapphires, yellows and padparashas follow suit.
