World Wide Gemology News 2018

USA

Montana, USA (Source: Gemological Institute of America Gems & Gemology Field Report: Big Sky Country Sapphire: Visiting Montana's Alluvial Deposits) Summer 2017
  • Mining in Montana has been conducted for over one hundred and fifty years. Recently new mining techniques aim to change what was once a small mining operation to the big leagues. Given the depletion of the world's larger sapphire mines in India, Madagascar, Thailand and Sri Lanka (Ceylon) this couldn't be happening at a more opportune time.
  • In the Southwest portion of Montana there have been four primary mines of operation. Two are still in operation and include the Upper Missouri River Gravel Bars (opened 1865) and the Dry Cottonwood Creek (1889). Two other mines, Rock Creek (1892) and Yogo Gulch (1895) are no longer in production. The Yogo sapphires are famous for their role in royal jewels and the intensity of their blue color. These sapphires are highly prized and renowned world-wide.
  • Montana produces all colors of corundum (also known as sapphires) and the majority of material lies in the pastel to medium color saturation range. Vivid colors are also found, in smaller quantities, as observed in the photo below.

Collision in Universe Earns a Gold Star

Frequently we report recent gemology finds from around the world. It seems this needs to expand to include our universe. Studying the collision of two incredibly dense neutron stars, in our universe and more specifically our galaxy, scientists found the formation of heavy elements including gold and platinum. Ethiopia's Sapphire Discovery (Town of Chila)

Spring 2017 introduced one of the world's newest sapphire discoveries in the northern region of Ethiopia. This discovery is so recent that we are still awaiting the sapphires' arrival to the market while heat testing and other analysis are performed. The sapphires have a strong blue-green pleochroism, often have rutile particles as inclusions, are being found in relatively large quantities that include varying sizes (average rough Is 2-3 grams but larger sizes over 50 grams have been found although the larger specimens are often cracked) and roughly 5-10% will remain unheated. Spring 2018 Pantone Color Selections & Fashion Trends

Color Symphony creates jewelry that is fashionable, durable, easy to wear and most importantly is an extension of the client's unique beauty, personality and spirit!

Color in design and working closely with our clients are fundamental elements in the creation process resulting in jewelry that reflects the client's unique style and artistic relevance.

The following quote, from the Pantone Color Institute's NY Fashion Week Spring 2018, poignantly expresses Color Symphony's use and purpose of color in its jewelry line.
"The desire for colorful self-expression is a key take away for Spring 2018. The color story is wildly divergent and we see a kaleidoscopic bounty of uplifting shades and feel-good tones. There is a feeling of optimism and confidence driving a new vitality into fashion trends. That doesn't mean that we don't continue to look for more neutral or classic shades as while simple, these core basics are seasonal essentials, working well on their own as well as providing the landscape for the color complexity."
The Spring 2018 Pantone palette playfully offers a unique and dramatic color landscape and includes (but is not limited to) the following vivid colors (as adapted from the Pantone Color Institute's Fashion Color Trend Report Spring, 2018):
